A hedge trimmer is a great tool for any lawn care regimen. When you’re buying a hedge trimmer, there are many factors to consider. Depending on the job you need to accomplish, you will need to pick between gas or electric. You will also need to look at blade size and blade gap size.

Gas Hedge Trimmer

If you have a large landscaping project, you will want a gas powered hedge trimmer. Using a gas hedge trimmer will give you the best mobility with the longest operating cycle. They’re able to cut faster and are more powerful than electric hedge trimmers.

Gas hedge trimmers are also heavier and louder than their electric counterparts. They also require a mixture of oil and gas in order to work. Gas hedge trimmers are more expensive than electric hedge trimmers. However, if you have a large job to do, a gas hedge trimmer is well worth the investment.

Electric Hedge Trimmer

Corded

Corded hedge trimmers give you consistent power as long as you can reach an electrical outlet. These electric hedge trimmers are typically lightweight and have an easy startup. They’re also quieter than their gas counterparts. Corded hedge trimmers don’t require gas, saving you money and keeping the environment safe from emissions.

While you have constant power, your mobility will be limited by the extension cord. Corded electric hedge trimmers are ideal for smaller lawns.

Cordless

Cordless hedge trimmers are the quietest of the three. Like the corded hedge trimmers, they are easy to start up and are lightweight. They are also cost-effective because they don’t require fuel. They run on a rechargeable battery.

However, cordless hedge trimmers don’t have as much power as gas hedge trimmers. Their lack of power may keep them from cutting large branches. Because they’re run on a battery, their run time is limited. They work well for small jobs.

Hedge Trimmer Blades

When you’re buying a hedge trimmer, you also need to consider blade size. The space between the trimmer blades is called the blade gap. The blade gap indicates the branch size that the blade can handle. For use in your home garden or lawn, look for a blade that has a gap size between 3/8” and 3/4”.

Blades are either single-sided or double-sided. Double-sided blades are more efficient because you can cut either up or down. Single-sided blades are the safer option because the blade is cutting away from you. You’ll find blades ranging in size from 13” all the way up to 40”.

For typical home use, a blade ranging from 13” to 16” will suffice. If you’re going to be working on larger hedges, a 20” blade or bigger will work. The longer the blade you use, the more even the cut will be. However, longer blades are harder to control than a shorter blade. Use caution and go with the blade that you’re comfortable using.

Hedge Trimmer Safety

As with any power equipment, you want to put safety first. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris. Also wear work gloves to protect your hand. If you’re using a loud gas hedge trimmer, wear hearing protection.

Hedge trimmers typically come with a safety guard, which protects your forward hand from touching the blade. Some hedge trimmers come with a feature where power is cut off when you release the trigger. This can help prevent a possible accident. Choose the hedge trimmer that fits you and your yard best, and enjoy a beautiful hedge and bushes all year long.
